Our Children's House

The Children's House is taught by a certified Montessori teacher and an assistant. Classes have mixed age groupings, allowing younger children to learn from the activities of the older children, and providing the older children the opportunity to teach and nurture the younger children. The Montessori Children's House is a relaxed yet stimulating environment, where children may learn in a non-competitive fashion at their own pace. The results are a love of learning, a positive self-image, and a sense of self-direction that form a strong foundation for future growth. Basic Montessori curriculum areas around which the classroom is organized are:

2 1/2 to 3 Hour Work - this cycle helps children actualize thoughts preceding class time. This time creates a forum for children to pursue their interests without interruption.

Practical Life Exercises - these exercises instill care of self, for others, and for the environment. Through these tasks children develop coordination, orderliness, concentration, and mastery of motor skills.

Sensorial Exercises - develops all senses and helps the child organize their thinking. Children build cognitive skills and learn to order and classify impressions by touching, seeing, smelling, tasting, listening, and exploring the physical properties of the environment.

Language - aided by language materials, the child learns to read phonetically and build sentence formation skills. Children are also exposed to the study of grammer.

Geography, Biology, Zoology, Art and Music - as extensions of sensorial and language activities, information relating to people and cultures different from the children's is built into lessons. Children learn to revere nature and understand a general respect for life. Art and music lessons expose the child to the wealth and knowledge designed to build culture, taste, and distinction. They also learn about great old and contemporary masters.

Math - children learn math skills by using real objects to count, sort, add and subtract. The activities help children understand mathematical concepts and principles by familiarizing them with the skills required to manipulate concrete materials. Thus they build problem solving skills.

Spanish - beginning Spanish consists of learning words, for example, the names of colors, animals, etc. Conversational phrases are also taught. It is held during school hours in the afternoon, two days a week.
