Dr. Maria Montessori and the Montessori Philosophy

The Montessori system of education is both a philosophy of child development and a rationale for guiding such growth. It is based on the work of Maria Montessori, (1870 - 1952). Her system focuses on the child's developmental needs for freedom within limits, as well as a carefully prepared environment which guarantees exposure to materials and experiences.  It is designed to take full advantage of the child's desire to learn and the child's unique ability to develop his/her own capabilities.

Greenbrier Montessori School was designed to foster a love of learning and to educate children to be caring, socially-responsible citizens of their community and world.  GMS seeks to educate the whole child, applying the Montessori philosophy, in a family-oriented environment.  For Dr. Montessori, and for GMS, education is a preparation for life.

GMS follows the philosophy of Dr. Montessori by offering a truly child-centered and multi-sensory environment. The curriculum, classroom, and teacher's role are all carefully designed to honor self-paced growth while encouraging group awareness and social cooperation.

A child learns best within a social environment that supports unique individual development. Following initial presentation by the teacher, the children work freely at their own pace with materials they have chosen. They self-motivate, become independent, develop a great sense of responsibility and good work habits. Maria Montessori gave children the opportunity to become self-teachers using the didactic materials, realizing children do more when they self-teach. This underlying philosophy, to self-teach, can be seen at work at Greenbrier Montessori School.
